Apple has collaborated with SpaceX to integrate Starlink satellite connectivity into the iPhone, with beta testing now underway.

    What’s in the Report

According to Gurman, while Apple presently provides texting services, there are plans to potentially extend these offerings to include data and voice calling capabilities in the future..

Apple is poised to integrate the Starlink network into its iPhone, as indicated by a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This feature is anticipated to operate in a manner akin to the Emergency SOS via Satellite function, which enables users to contact emergency services in the absence of cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.

The technology firm based in Cupertino has formed a collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, the creator of the Starlink satellite network, along with a telecommunications provider in the United States to initiate beta testing.

    Highlights of Collaboration

    • Apple collaborates with SpaceX and T-Mobile to provide satellite connectivity
    • The newest iPhone models are expected to support this service
    • The functionality is reportedly set to be initially available only in the United States.

    Starlink Network on iPhone

Apple launched the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature alongside the iPhone 14 models in 2022, specifically for users in the United States and Canada. This feature utilizes one of Globalstar’s 24 satellites positioned in low-earth orbit to provide cellular connectivity. According to Apple, a partnership with Starlink is expected to offer similar capabilities. In a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it was noted that this service will serve as an alternative to Apple’s proprietary offering and will initially be restricted to the United States.

At the outset, the service will facilitate text messaging, with plans to expand its functionality to include data and voice calls in the future. For the implementation of this service, Apple has collaborated with T-Mobile, and it is currently in a beta testing phase.

Customers are reportedly able to enroll in an “early version” of the Starlink service on select iPhone models. Gurman indicated that the latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, are compatible with this initiative, and Apple intends to extend this feature to the Apple Watch Ultra later this year.

This functionality is believed to have been introduced with the recent iOS 18.3 update, which was released on Monday. A limited number of iPhone users with T-Mobile as their carrier have reportedly received a notification regarding this service.

“You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3”.
