According to Apple, a partnership with Starlink is expected to offer similar capabilities. In a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it was noted that this service will serve as an alternative to Apple’s proprietary offering and will initially be restricted to the United States.
At the outset, the service will facilitate text messaging, with plans to expand its functionality to include data and voice calls in the future. For the implementation of this service, Apple has collaborated with T-Mobile, and it is currently in a beta testing phase.
Customers are reportedly able to enroll in an “early version” of the Starlink service on select iPhone models. Gurman indicated that the latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, are compatible with this initiative, and Apple intends to extend this feature to the Apple Watch Ultra later this year.
This functionality is believed to have been introduced with the recent iOS 18.3 update, which was released on Monday. A limited number of iPhone users with T-Mobile as their carrier have reportedly received a notification regarding this service.
